The Vanderbilt Cloud Innovation Lab (VCIL), housed at the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries and powered by Amazon Web Services, provides immersive experiences for Vanderbilt University students who are interested in learning how to use artificial intelligence and cloud technologies to develop advancements in digital preservation. Under the mentorship of AWS and library staff experts, students not only gain important career skills by collaborating on open-source technology but also have meaningful opportunities to enact lasting, positive change. Their innovative solutions to today’s real-life challenges ensure that the world’s cultural heritage is preserved—in perpetuity—for the benefit of future generations.

Project Proposals

  • Cloud Computing Projects

The Vanderbilt University Cloud Innovation Lab is seeking innovative project proposals that support academic libraries, archives, and applied digital preservation efforts. We partner with faculty, librarians, archivists, researchers, other Cloud Innovation Centers, and community organizations to develop cloud-enabled, AI-assisted solutions that improve access to cultural heritage, streamline library and archival workflows, and strengthen long-term digital preservation. We are particularly interested in projects with the potential to benefit not only Vanderbilt University but also the broader library, archives, and cultural heritage community. Priority is given to initiatives that address shared challenges, demonstrate opportunities for innovation, and can be adapted or adopted by peer institutions. This intake form is the first step in identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing projects for development by interdisciplinary student teams working alongside VCIL staff and project sponsors. Submitted proposals will be reviewed for their impact, technical feasibility, educational value, sustainability, and potential for broad community benefit.
